Treating Prostate Cancer
Surgery (Prostatectomy)
- Usually recommended for early-stage prostate cancer that has not spread to other
tissues or organs.
- May be recommended for prostate cancer patients who are in good health and younger
than age 70.
- Goal is to remove all of the prostate and surrounding tissues (a procedure called
radical prostatectomy).
- Side effects may be temporary or permanent, depending upon the patient, and may
not occur in all patients.
Potential Side Effects of Surgery for Prostate Cancer
- Loss of urinary control, called
incontinence.
- Loss of the ability to achieve or maintain an erection.
