ELIGARD Is an Effective drug for Hormonal Therapy of Advanced Prostate Cancer
All LHRH agonist therapy, including ELIGARD, is associated with an initial rise
in testosterone level after the very first injection. However, in studies with ELIGARD,
patients experienced:
- No or minimal testosterone breakthrough
Testosterone will briefly rise after the first ELIGARD injection. After reaching
low testosterone levels equal to those achieved with surgical castration, very few
men experienced "breakthrough" (rises in testosterone above castration level).
- Reduced Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA)*
All patients who had high PSA values at the start of the clinical trials experienced
decreased PSA values.
- No Worsening of Symptoms of Advanced Prostate Cancer
Patients rated the following symptoms low throughout the studies:
—Bone pain
—Pain during urination
—Urinary symptoms

LHRH agonists lower testosterone. Therefore, they often cause hot flashes. In clinical
studies in men with advanced prostate cancer, the majority of men experienced hot
flashes. However, the majority of the hot flashes were reported as mild.
*These decreases occur within 2 to 4 weeks after initiation of treatment.
